How to Make a Simple Homemade Herbicide
If weeds are taking over your driveway, patio, or other unwanted areas, you can make a simple weed-control spray at home.
What You’ll Need
- 1 liter (about 4¼ cups) of white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap
- A spray bottle
How to Make It
- Pour the vinegar into the spray bottle.
- Add the dish soap.
- Close the bottle and gently mix—don’t shake vigorously.
- Label the bottle clearly and keep it away from children and pets.
How to Use It
Choose a dry, sunny day with little or no wind.
Spray the mixture directly onto the leaves of the weeds, trying to avoid desirable plants. The vinegar can damage or kill foliage it contacts, while the soap helps the solution spread over the leaf surface.
You may see wilting within a day or two, but this doesn’t guarantee that the roots are dead. Some perennial weeds can grow back and may require repeated treatment or removal.
Important: Don’t Add Salt
Salt is sometimes suggested in homemade weed-killer recipes, but it can accumulate in soil and make it difficult for other plants to grow.
Use Carefully
