NEVER Use Magnesium If You Are Taking Any of the Following Medications

While magnesium is an essential mineral and a popular supplement, it can interact with several types of medications. In most cases, you do not necessarily have to avoid magnesium entirely; rather, **timing matters** (usually spacing them out by 2 to 4 hours), though certain conditions or drugs require strict medical supervision.

The primary medications that require caution or strategic spacing when taking magnesium include:

* **Certain Antibiotics (Tetracyclines and Fluoroquinolones):** Medications like doxycycline or ciprofloxacin bind to magnesium in the digestive tract, creating a compound that the body cannot absorb. This renders the antibiotic ineffective. *(Action: Take your antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after magnesium).*
* **Osteoporosis Medications (Bisphosphonates):** Drugs like alendronate (Fosamax) have drastically reduced absorption if taken alongside or near magnesium. *(Action: Separate them by at least 2 hours).*
* **Thyroid Medications (Levothyroxine):** Magnesium can significantly decrease how much thyroid hormone your body absorbs, impacting your symptom control. *(Action: Take thyroid medication first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and wait at least 4 hours before taking magnesium).*
* **Gabapentin:** Magnesium can lower the absorption and effectiveness of this medication used for nerve pain and seizures. *(Action: Space doses by at least 2 hours).*
* **Potassium-Sparing Diuretics:** While some water pills deplete magnesium, potassium-sparing diuretics can cause your body to retain too much of it, risking a dangerous buildup (hypermagnesemia). *(Action: Avoid supplements unless explicitly directed and monitored by a doctor).*

### Absolute Contraindications

Magnesium supplements should generally be **avoided or strictly supervised** by a physician if you have **severe kidney disease**, because compromised kidneys cannot filter out excess magnesium, leading to dangerous toxicity.

Are you currently taking any of these medications, or looking into magnesium for a specific health purpose?
