I found this in my grandmother’s dresser after she died. None of us have any idea what it is. Check the first comment for the answer.

The Kitchen Habit Many People Overlook: Should You Keep a Towel on the Oven Door?

A kitchen towel hanging from an oven door can look convenient, but it’s not necessarily a good habit. The main issue isn’t that the towel has a special benefit—it’s that towels can become contaminated or create a fire and burn hazard.

Why you should be careful

  • It can collect bacteria: Kitchen towels frequently become damp and can pick up bacteria from hands, food surfaces, and spills.

  • It can spread contamination: Using the same towel for hands, dishes, and cleaning surfaces can transfer microorganisms around the kitchen. from burners and other hot surfaces. Wash them frequently, especially when they’re damp or visibly dirty

  • It can become a burn hazard: A towel hanging near a hot oven, stovetop, or burner can get extremely hot or potentially catch fire if it comes into contact with a flame or heating element.

  • It can get trapped in the oven door: Depending on the oven design, a towel can interfere with the door closing properly or become damaged by heat.

A safer approach

Keep clean, dry towels readily available but away from burners and other hot surfaces. Wash them frequently, especially when they’re damp or visibly dirty. Consider separate towels for drying hands and handling clean dishes.

If you use a towel to handle hot cookware, use a proper dry oven mitt or potholder instead. A wet towel conducts heat surprisingly well and can cause burns.

Bottom line: There’s no health benefit to deliberately keeping a towel on the oven door. Keep kitchen towels clean, dry, and away from heat sources for safer food preparation.
