Why is it so important not to flush the toilet after every trip to the toilet to urinate?

If you’ve seen the advice “don’t flush after every urination,” it’s mainly about saving water, not protecting your health.

Is it actually necessary?

  • No. There is no medical requirement to avoid flushing after urinating.

  • If you’re sharing a bathroom, have young children, are immunocompromised, or notice odor, flush normally.

  • If you’re trying to reduce water use, flushing less frequently can save water. A modern toilet uses substantially less water per flush than older models.

The saying “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” is therefore a water-conservation suggestion, not a health rule.

Also, don’t avoid flushing if urine or feces has contaminated the toilet or if doing so creates an unpleasant or unhygienic bathroom environment. Regular cleaning remains important.
