Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

If you’re referring to the viral banana-storage tip, the “one kitchen item” is usually plastic wrap.

Why it can help

Bananas naturally release ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening. The stem area releases a significant amount of ethylene. Wrapping the banana stems with a small piece of plastic wrap can slow the movement of ethylene and may modestly extend shelf life.

How to do it

  1. Keep the bananas together or separate them, depending on your preference.

  2. Wrap the crown/stem ends tightly with plastic wrap.

  3. Keep them at room temperature while they’re still green or yellow and not fully ripe.

  4. Once they’re ripe, you can refrigerate them to slow further ripening. The peel may turn brown or black, but the fruit inside can remain good for longer.

One caveat: “10 days longer” isn’t guaranteed. Temperature, banana ripeness, humidity, and handling all affect how long they last.
