These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease
Liver disease can sometimes develop without obvious symptoms, especially in its early stages. Certain changes in your skin, eyes, or body can be warning signs, although they can also have many other causes.
7 visible signs to know
-
Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) 🟡
Yellowing can occur when bilirubin builds up in the body and may indicate liver or bile-duct problems. -
Swelling of the abdomen
A noticeably enlarged abdomen can result from fluid accumulation (ascites) in advanced liver disease. -
Swollen legs or ankles
Fluid retention can occur with significant liver dysfunction, although heart, kidney, and other conditions can cause it too. -
Easy bruising or bleeding
Advanced liver disease can interfere with proteins involved in blood clotting. -
Spider-like blood vessels on the skin
Small, branching red blood vessels—often on the upper chest, face, neck, or arms—can occur with certain liver conditions. -
Red palms
Persistent redness of the palms (palmar erythema) can be associated with chronic liver disease, but it isn’t specific to liver problems. -
Itchy skin
Persistent generalized itching can occur with some liver and bile-flow disorders, sometimes before other obvious signs appear.
Other symptoms to watch for
Unexplained fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, dark urine, unusually pale stools, confusion, or unintentional weight loss can also occur depending on the type and stage of liver disease.
Important: These signs don’t prove that someone has liver disease. For example, jaundice can have causes outside the liver, and swollen legs can have cardiovascular or kidney-related causes.
When to seek medical care
If you develop new yellowing of the eyes/skin, persistent abdominal swelling, unexplained bruising, or significant changes in urine or stool color, arrange a medical evaluation. Blood tests and sometimes ultrasound or other imaging can help identify the cause.
Emergency symptoms such as vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, severe confusion, fainting, or rapidly worsening abdominal swelling require urgent medical attention.
