How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Make Them Fresh Again 🛏️✨
Pillows collect sweat, body oils, skin cells, dust, and allergens over time. Before washing one, always check its care label—some pillows should never go in a washing machine.
🧺 For washable pillows
You’ll need:
-
Mild laundry detergent
-
Washing machine
-
Dryer or a well-ventilated place to dry
Steps:
-
Check the label. Confirm that the pillow is machine washable and check the recommended temperature.
-
Pretreat visible stains. Apply a small amount of mild detergent to stained areas and gently work it in.
-
Wash two pillows together when possible to keep the machine balanced. Use a gentle cycle and don’t use excessive detergent.
-
Run an extra rinse if your machine has one, so detergent doesn’t remain inside the filling.
-
Dry completely. For machine-dryable pillows, use a low-heat setting and periodically fluff them. Make absolutely sure the interior is dry before using them again.
-
Air them out afterward in a clean, well-ventilated area to remove lingering odors.
⚠️ Avoid the viral “whitening” tricks
Don’t automatically add bleach, vinegar, baking soda, or other household chemicals. They can damage certain fabrics or fillings, and mixing cleaning chemicals can produce dangerous fumes.
For memory-foam or latex pillows, don’t put the entire pillow in the washing machine unless the manufacturer specifically permits it. Usually, the cover can be washed while the foam is spot-cleaned according to its care instructions.
🌿 Keeping pillows fresh
Use a washable pillow protector underneath the pillowcase, wash pillowcases regularly, and keep the sleeping area dry and well ventilated.
Tip: If a pillow remains yellow, smells musty after thorough cleaning, or has developed mold, replacing it may be safer than trying increasingly harsh cleaning treatments.
