How to Get Rid of Milia: Those Annoying Fat Cysts

How to get rid of milia

Milia are tiny, firm white or yellowish cysts made of trapped keratin just beneath the skin. They are common and harmless, especially around the eyes and cheeks. Despite sometimes being called “fat cysts,” milia aren’t fat deposits.

What you can do

  • Don’t squeeze or pierce them. Trying to pop milia at home can cause infection, scarring, or skin discoloration.

  • Use gentle skincare. A mild cleanser and non-comedogenic moisturizer are good choices.

  • Consider a retinoid. An over-the-counter retinol product may help prevent new milia and gradually improve existing ones. Start slowly because irritation is possible. Do not use topical retinoids during pregnancy unless your clinician specifically advises otherwise.

  • Sun protection helps. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30+ can reduce skin damage that may contribute to some types of milia.

  • For quick removal, see a dermatologist. A dermatologist can safely remove milia, usually by carefully opening the cyst and extracting its contents. Other treatments, such as certain chemical peels or lasers, may be appropriate for multiple or recurrent lesions.

When to get it checked

If a bump grows, becomes painful, bleeds, changes appearance, or doesn’t look like typical milia, have it examined rather than assuming it’s a milia.

If you tell me where the milia are (especially if they’re around the eyes), how long you’ve had them, and your age, I can suggest a simple routine appropriate for that area.
