Protect Your Home and Wallet: Unplug These 5 Appliances When You’re Done Using Them

Unplugging certain appliances when you’re finished using them can reduce standby electricity use and, in some situations, lower electrical or fire risks. You don’t necessarily need to unplug everything—focus on devices that are rarely used or draw power while idle.

  1. Space heaters 🔥
Unplug them when not in use. They can become a fire hazard if left running or if something goes wrong with the appliance.

  2. Toasters and toaster ovens 🍞
These heating appliances are best unplugged after use, particularly if you’re leaving home or going to bed.

  3. Coffee makers
Many continue consuming electricity to maintain temperature or power displays. Unplugging after use can eliminate that standby consumption.

  4. Hair dryers and styling tools 💇
Unplug them after use rather than relying solely on the power switch. This is especially important around water.

  5. Chargers and power adapters 🔌
Phone, laptop, and other chargers can consume a small amount of electricity when plugged in without charging a device. Unplugging unused adapters also keeps cords and plugs from unnecessarily remaining energized.

An easy rule

If it heats up, isn’t used regularly, or doesn’t need to remain powered, consider unplugging it.

For convenience, a power strip with an on/off switch can make it easier to disconnect several electronics at once. Avoid repeatedly unplugging appliances that are designed to remain connected, such as refrigerators, freezers, medical equipment, and essential networking equipment.
