What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health?

Urine color can provide clues about hydration, diet, medications, and sometimes health problems. Color alone cannot diagnose a condition, but certain changes are worth paying attention to.

  • Pale yellow: Usually a sign of good hydration.
  • Dark yellow or amber: Often means your urine is concentrated and you may need more fluids.
  • Clear: You may be drinking more water than you need. Persistently completely clear urine can sometimes be associated with excessive fluid intake.
  • Orange: Certain medications or supplements can cause orange urine, but it can also occur with dehydration or, less commonly, liver or bile-duct problems.
  • Pink or red: Beets and some foods can cause this, but blood in the urine can also make it pink, red, or cola-colored and should be medically evaluated.
  • Brown or tea-colored: Severe dehydration can cause dark urine, while liver problems, muscle injury, or certain medications can also be responsible.
  • Blue or green: Unusual, but certain medications, dyes, foods, or occasionally urinary infections can cause these colors.
  • Cloudy or milky: This can occur with dehydration or harmless mineral deposits, but may also be associated with a urinary tract infection or other urinary problems.

When should you seek medical advice?

Don’t ignore urine that is persistently red, brown, very dark, or cloudy, especially if you also have pain or burning during urination, fever, abdominal or back pain, jaundice, or a noticeable change in how often you urinate.

If urine suddenly turns red or dark brown without an obvious dietary or medication explanation, it’s best to have it checked rather than assuming it’s simply dehydration.
