Purple or bluish veins on the legs are often harmless, but they can sometimes signal an underlying circulation problem. Here are six possible reasons:
- Spider veins
Small, branching red, blue, or purple blood vessels close to the skin’s surface can develop with age, hormonal changes, genetics, or prolonged standing. - Varicose veins
Enlarged, twisted veins may appear blue or purple and can cause aching, heaviness, swelling, itching, or discomfort after standing for long periods. - Chronic venous insufficiency
