These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

If you’re referring to the headline “These visible signs may be hiding liver disease,” there is some truth to it. Liver disease can remain unnoticed for a long time, but certain changes in the skin, eyes, abdomen, or hands can be clues.

Visible signs worth knowing

  • Yellow skin or yellowing of the whites of the eyes (jaundice): Can occur when the liver cannot properly process bilirubin.
  • A swollen abdomen: Fluid accumulation (ascites) can occur with advanced liver disease.
  • Swollen legs or ankles: Fluid retention can accompany significant liver dysfunction.
  • Easy bruising or bleeding: Advanced liver disease can interfere with proteins needed for normal blood clotting.
  • Spider-like blood vessels: Small, branching red vessels called spider angiomas can occur, particularly with chronic liver disease.
  • Red palms: Palmar erythema can sometimes be associated with chronic liver disease.
  • Itchy skin: Generalized itching can occur with some liver and bile-flow disorders.
  • Dark urine or unusually pale stools: Changes in bile processing can produce these symptoms.

Important: these signs don’t prove liver disease

Many of these symptoms have other causes, and early liver disease may cause no visible symptoms at all. Blood tests such as liver enzymes and bilirubin, together with medical evaluation—and sometimes ultrasound or other imaging—are used to investigate liver problems.

If you notice new yellowing of your eyes/skin, significant abdominal swelling, vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, confusion, or severe drowsiness, seek medical attention promptly.
