NEVER Use Magnesium If You Are Taking Any of the Following Medications

That statement is

too broad. Magnesium supplements can interact with some medications, but it is not true that you should “

never use magnesium” with all of them.

Important examples include:

  • Certain antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones): magnesium can reduce their absorption. They usually need to be taken several hours apart.
  • Levothyroxine: magnesium can reduce absorption; spacing doses is generally recommended.
  • Bisphosphonates (such as alendronate): magnesium can interfere with absorption.
  • Some diuretics and other medicines affecting magnesium levels: the interaction can go in the opposite direction—some medicines can increase or decrease magnesium levels.

If you’re taking prescription medicines, check with a pharmacist or doctor before starting a magnesium supplement, particularly if you have kidney disease.

If you give me the names of the medications you’re taking, I can check which ones interact with magnesium and explain the appropriate timing.
