8 Things You Should Never Put in the Dishwasher—and Why
The dishwasher is convenient, but not everything belongs inside it. Heat, strong detergent, prolonged water exposure, and powerful spray jets can damage certain items.
1. 🔪 Good kitchen knives
Dishwasher detergent and high heat can dull blades, while knives can bang against other dishes. Hand-washing and drying them promptly helps preserve the edge.
2. 🪵 Wooden utensils and cutting boards
Repeated exposure to hot water and heat can cause wood to warp, crack, split, or dry out. Hand-wash wooden items and dry them promptly.
3. 🥘 Cast-iron cookware
Dishwasher detergent can strip away the seasoning that protects cast iron. Prolonged moisture can also encourage rust.
4. 🥄 Wooden-handled or glued utensils
Heat and water can weaken adhesives and damage wooden handles, causing them to loosen or separate.
5. 🧴 Insulated travel mugs and containers
Some vacuum-insulated products can be damaged by dishwasher heat, and water can sometimes get into areas that are difficult to dry. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. 🥂 Delicate crystal or hand-painted glassware
Strong water jets and temperature changes can cause delicate glass to chip, crack, or become cloudy. Hand-washing is usually safer.
7. 🍳 Nonstick cookware without dishwasher approval
Repeated dishwasher cycles can gradually degrade some nonstick coatings and damage handles or other components. If the manufacturer says hand-wash only, follow that recommendation.
