8 Plants that Help Repel Mice, Spiders & Other Insects

Here are 8 plants commonly used as natural pest deterrents:

  1. 🌿 Peppermint — Its strong menthol scent may discourage mice, ants, spiders, and some other insects.

  2. 🌱 Spearmint — Another strongly scented mint that can help make areas less attractive to some pests.

  3. 🌿 Lavender — Its fragrance is often used to deter mosquitoes, flies, fleas, and moths.

  4. 🌱 Rosemary — Its aromatic oils may help repel mosquitoes and certain insects.

  5. 🌿 Basil — The scent can discourage mosquitoes and flies, particularly around outdoor sitting areas.

  6. 🌼 Marigolds — Often planted around gardens because their aroma may deter some insects and nematodes.

  7. 🌿 Catnip — Contains nepetalactone, a compound that has demonstrated insect-repellent properties, particularly against mosquitoes.

  8. 🌱 Citronella grass — Its citronella-containing oils are associated with mosquito repellency, although simply growing the plant is generally less effective than using concentrated citronella oil.

Important: These plants aren’t guaranteed to keep mice, spiders, or insects out of a home. For mice especially, sealing cracks and eliminating food sources is much more reliable. For spiders, reducing insects and keeping entry points sealed can help more than plants alone.
