7 Signs of Arthritis You Shouldn’t Ignore

Arthritis isn’t just a normal part of getting older. There are many types, and early evaluation can help identify the cause and guide treatment.

1. 😣 Persistent joint pain

Pain that keeps returning or lasts for weeks—especially in the knees, hips, hands, or spine—deserves attention.

2. 🌅 Stiffness after resting

Morning stiffness or stiffness after sitting can occur with arthritis. Stiffness lasting longer than about 30 minutes can be particularly important to discuss with a healthcare professional.

3. 🦵 Swollen joints

A joint that repeatedly becomes swollen, puffy, or tender may be inflamed.

4. 🔥 Warmth or redness

A warm or visibly red joint can occur with inflammatory arthritis. However, sudden redness, severe pain, and swelling can also indicate infection or gout and may require urgent evaluation.

5. ✋ Reduced range of motion

Difficulty fully bending, straightening, gripping, or moving a joint can be a sign of joint disease.

6. 🪜 Pain that interferes with daily activities

If joint pain makes it difficult to walk, climb stairs, open containers, get dressed, or sleep, don’t simply accept it as “old age.”

7. 🔄 Symptoms affecting multiple joints

Pain, stiffness, or swelling in several joints—particularly if symptoms occur on both sides of the body—can sometimes point toward an inflammatory form of arthritis.

🚨 When should you seek prompt care?

Get medical attention for a suddenly very painful, hot, swollen joint, especially if you also have fever or chills. A joint infection can be serious and needs prompt treatment.

Also get evaluated if joint symptoms are persistent, progressively worsening, or accompanied by unexplained weight loss, significant fatigue, or weakness.
