7 medications that can affect memory and cognition
The claim that seven medications “cause severe dementia and profound brain damage” is too strong. Some medicines—particularly in older adults—can cause confusion, delirium, sedation, or memory problems, and some long-term observational studies have found associations with dementia. Important: don’t stop these medicines suddenly
A medicine that can affect cognition may still be appropriate and beneficial for a particular person. Never discontinue a prescribed medication on your own. Some, especially benzodiazepines, can cause dangerous withdrawal if stopped abruptly. A doctor or pharmacist can review the medication, dose, duration, and possible alternatives.
If someone develops sudden confusion, don’t assume it’s dementia or a medication side effect—sudden confusion can have urgent causes such as infection, stroke, low blood sugar, or medication toxicity and needs prompt medical assessment.
