4 Ways to Erase Age Spots with Baking Soda for Younger, More Even Skin

🧴 “4 Ways to Erase Age Spots With Baking Soda” — Does It Work?

This is a viral beauty claim, not an evidence-based treatment. Baking soda isn’t a proven way to erase age spots, and using abrasive or irritating substances on the skin can actually cause irritation and make dark pigmentation worse. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends gentle skin care for dark spots. (American Academy of Dermatology)

Why I wouldn’t recommend baking soda

Baking soda is alkaline and can disrupt the skin barrier. Scrubbing it into age spots may cause irritation, dryness, or inflammation. In people prone to pigmentation, irritation itself can lead to darker spots. (American Academy of Dermatology)

Better ways to fade age spots

For genuine sun-related age spots, dermatologists may recommend:

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every day 🌞
  • Products containing vitamin C, retinoids, azelaic acid, glycolic acid, or kojic acid
  • Prescription treatments when appropriate
  • Laser treatment, chemical peels, cryotherapy, or microdermabrasion for faster or more significant results. (American Academy of Dermatology)

⚠️ One important warning

Not every dark spot is an age spot. Some lesions that look like harmless pigmentation can actually be skin cancer or a precancerous lesion. A new, changing, bleeding, itching, or unusual spot should be examined before attempting to lighten it. (American Academy of Dermatology)

Bottom line: Skip the baking-soda scrub. Sun protection and evidence-based skin treatments are much safer and more effective for fading age spots.
