3 important actions to remember in an emergency when you’re alone
1. Get safe and assess the situation
Take a breath and stay as calm as possible so you can think clearly.
Look for immediate dangers such as fire, smoke, traffic, electrical hazards, violence, or a collapsing structure.
If you can do so safely, move away from the danger or go somewhere secure.
If you are injured, avoid unnecessary movement, especially if you suspect a serious neck, back, or head injury.
Quickly ask yourself: “What happened? Am I in immediate danger? Can I safely help myself?”
2. Call for help and clearly communicate your location
Call your local emergency service as soon as possible if the situation is serious or life-threatening.
Tell the dispatcher:
Where you are — address, landmark, or GPS location.
What happened — for example, severe bleeding, chest pain, fire, or injury.
Whether you are conscious and able to breathe normally.
Any immediate danger around you.
Follow the dispatcher’s instructions and don’t hang up unless they tell you to.
If you cannot make a voice call, use an available emergency-text service or contact a trusted person who can call for you, depending on what is available where you live.
3. Give yourself basic first aid while waiting
Severe bleeding: apply firm, continuous pressure with clean cloth or gauze.
Burn: cool the area with clean, cool running water; don’t apply ice directly.
Fainting or feeling very weak: sit or lie down somewhere safe to prevent a fall.
Possible heart attack or stroke: call emergency services immediately rather than trying to drive yourself.
Keep your phone nearby, unlock your door if it is safe to do so, and make it easy for rescuers to find you.
If you have prescribed emergency medication or a medical alert device, use it as directed.

Easy way to remember: SAFE → CALL → CARE.
First make yourself safe, then call for help, then provide basic care while waiting.
