Who Is Most at Risk of Night Cramps?

Night cramps, especially sudden painful cramps in the calves or feet while sleeping, can happen to anyone. However, they’re more common in certain groups:

  • Older adults: Risk increases with age, particularly after 50.
  • Pregnant women: Leg cramps are especially common during pregnancy.
  • People who stand or exercise for long periods: Muscle fatigue and overuse can contribute.
  • People who are dehydrated: Heavy sweating or inadequate fluid intake may increase the likelihood of cramping.
  • People with certain medical conditions: Diabetes, kidney disease, nerve disorders, circulation problems, and some hormonal disorders can be associated with muscle cramps.
  • People taking certain medications: Some diuretics, cholesterol-lowering medicines, and other medications can sometimes contribute to cramps.
  • People who remain in one position for long periods: Sitting or standing for extended periods may increase the risk.

What can help?

Gentle calf and hamstring stretching before bed, staying adequately hydrated, regular physical activity, and avoiding sudden increases in exercise may help reduce nighttime cramps.

If cramps are frequent, severe, getting worse, associated with swelling or weakness, or repeatedly waking you from sleep, it’s worth discussing them with a healthcare professional to look for an underlying cause.
