What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

What Is the Normal Blood Pressure for Each Age?

Many people think blood pressure should naturally be higher as they get older. While blood pressure can change with age, normal adult blood pressure is generally below 120/80 mmHg.

Adult Blood Pressure Guide

Age Normal Blood Pressure
18–39 years Below 120/80
40–59 years Below 120/80
60–79 years Below 120/80
80+ years Below 120/80

These are general adult categories—not individual treatment targets. Your ideal blood pressure may depend on your health, medications, and medical history.

What Do the Numbers Mean?

  • Normal: Below 120/80
  • Elevated: 120–129 and below 80
  • Stage 1 high blood pressure: 130–139 or 80–89
  • Stage 2 high blood pressure: 140 or higher or 90 or higher

A single unusual reading does not necessarily mean you have high blood pressure. Repeated measurements taken correctly are more useful.

When Is It an Emergency?

A reading above 180/120 mmHg can be dangerous. If it occurs with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Bottom line: Don’t assume that high blood pressure is “normal for your age.” For adults, keeping blood pressure in a healthy range is important at every stage of life.
