What Happens When You Take Fish Oil for 90 Days?
Taking fish oil for three months may have some measurable effects, but it isn’t a guaranteed “heart cleanse” or cure-all. The effects depend heavily on the amount of EPA and DHA you’re actually getting and your reason for taking it.
What you might notice
1. Triglycerides may decrease
Omega-3s can lower blood triglycerides. Research suggests EPA and DHA can reduce triglycerides by roughly 15% on average, although results vary. Prescription-strength omega-3 products at appropriate doses have a much stronger, established effect.
2. Your cholesterol may not improve—and LDL can sometimes rise
Fish oil shouldn’t be viewed as a substitute for cholesterol medication. Some EPA+DHA preparations can increase LDL cholesterol, particularly at high doses.
3. You may experience digestive effects
Common side effects include fishy aftertaste, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea and stomach discomfort.
4. It doesn’t necessarily prevent a heart attack
Although omega-3-rich fish is part of a heart-healthy diet, ordinary over-the-counter fish-oil supplements haven’t consistently demonstrated the cardiovascular benefits people often associate with them. Prescription omega-3 medications are different and are used for specific conditions.
⚠️ One important potential risk
High-dose omega-3 supplementation—particularly around 4 g/day over longer periods—has been associated with a slightly increased risk of atrial fibrillation in some people with cardiovascular disease or high cardiovascular risk.
Fish oil can also interact with medications that affect blood clotting. If you’re taking an anticoagulant or another medication that affects bleeding, discuss fish oil with your healthcare professional before starting it.
