If you’re referring to the viral “If you find this insect in your home, it means you need to…” posts, the missing advice is often exaggerated. Finding an insect indoors usually means something much more ordinary: the insect found food, moisture, warmth, shelter, or an easy way inside.
What you should actually do
- Identify the insect first. Different insects indicate very different problems.
- Check for moisture: leaks, damp bathrooms, standing water, and condensation can attract many pests.
- Inspect food storage: crumbs, open food, pet food, and garbage can attract ants, cockroaches, and flies.
- Seal entry points: check gaps around doors, windows, pipes, vents, and cracks in walls.
- Clean regularly: particularly around kitchens, drains, and areas where food is prepared.
- Look for an infestation: repeated sightings, droppings, shed skins, nests, or damage are more significant than finding one insect.
Don’t panic over a single insect
One insect doesn’t automatically mean your home is dirty, contaminated, or dangerous. Some species simply wander indoors.
