The Trick to Defrosting a Freezer Quickly — Without the Stress
If your freezer has built-up ice, you can speed up the process safely with hot water and a little patience. You don’t need a knife, hairdryer, or harsh chemicals.
⚡ A quick method
- Unplug the freezer and remove all food. Keep frozen food in an insulated cooler while you work.
- Put towels around the freezer to absorb melting water.
- Place a heat-resistant bowl or pan of hot water inside the empty freezer and close the door.
- Leave it for several minutes. The steam will soften the ice.
- Gently remove loosened ice with a plastic scraper or your hands.
- Replace the hot water as needed until the remaining ice melts.
- Dry the interior completely before plugging the freezer back in and returning the food.
🚫 Don’t do these things
- Never use a knife, screwdriver, or other sharp object to chip away ice—you can puncture refrigerant lines or damage the freezer.
- Don’t pour boiling water directly onto plastic surfaces.
- Avoid using an open flame.
- If using a hairdryer, be extremely cautious around water; hot water/steam and electrical appliances are a dangerous combination. The safer choice is simply a container of hot water.
