“The Most Powerful Herb That Destroys Parasites, UTIs, Herpes and Flu” — Is That True?
This kind of headline is misleading. There is no single herb proven to eliminate parasites, urinary infections, herpes viruses, and influenza.
If the post is referring to oregano or oregano oil, there is some laboratory and limited human research suggesting antimicrobial activity, but that is very different from proving that oregano oil can cure these infections. Oregano extracts are not approved treatments for any disease.
What about the individual claims?
- Urinary tract infections: Cranberry may modestly help prevent recurrent UTIs in some women, but it doesn’t treat an existing UTI. Herbal treatments overall have insufficient human evidence to replace standard treatment.
- Parasites: Some herbs have shown antiparasitic effects in laboratory or small studies, but that doesn’t establish them as reliable treatments for human parasitic infections.
- Herpes: There is no good evidence that an herb can eliminate herpes viruses from the body.
- Influenza: The NIH’s NCCIH states that no complementary approach has been shown to treat or prevent influenza.
⚠️ Don’t substitute herbs for treatment
A suspected UTI can sometimes progress to a kidney infection, while certain parasitic, herpes, and influenza infections can also require specific medical treatment. Delaying effective treatment in favor of an herbal remedy can be risky.
Herbal supplements can also interact with prescription medicines, and their safety and contents can vary considerably between products.
