Taking a Spoonful of Honey Before Sleeping: How Does It Work?

Taking a spoonful of honey before bedtime is a simple home remedy that may soothe your throat, calm coughing, and help you sleep more comfortably when you have a cold or mild throat irritation.

1. Soothes an Irritated Throat

Honey creates a soothing coating over the throat lining, which may reduce the tickling sensation that triggers coughing, especially when lying down.

2. Helps Calm Nighttime Coughing

Honey may reduce the frequency and severity of nighttime coughing associated with upper respiratory infections. Some studies suggest it can help children with coughs sleep better, although evidence in adults is more limited.

3. May Help You Sleep More Comfortably

By easing coughing and throat irritation, honey may help you wake up less frequently during the night. It is not a sedative or a direct treatment for insomnia.

4. How to Take Honey Before Bed

  • Take 1–2 teaspoons of honey about 30 minutes before bedtime.

  • Alternatively, mix it into a cup of warm water or caffeine-free tea.

  • Drink enough fluids throughout the day to help keep mucus thin.

5. Does Honey Remove Chest Phlegm?

Honey may soothe coughing, but it does not directly dissolve or remove mucus from the lungs. Staying hydrated and addressing the underlying cause of mucus buildup are also important.

Important precautions: Never give honey to babies under 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism. Honey contains sugar, so people with diabetes should account for its carbohydrate content.

Seek medical advice if your cough persists, you develop a high fever, you cough up blood, or you experience breathing difficulties.
