Vicks VapoRub is often presented online as a “miracle” household remedy, but some of the viral uses aren’t well supported by medical evidence.
Uses that are actually established
-
Cough relief: When used as directed on the chest and throat, the mentholated vapors can provide temporary relief from cough associated with a cold.
-
Minor muscle and joint aches: It can temporarily soothe minor aches when applied to the affected area as directed.
-
Cold-related comfort: Menthol can create a sensation of easier breathing, although it doesn’t actually remove congestion from the airways.
Popular claims that need caution
You may see VapoRub recommended for toenail fungus, warts, scars, headaches, insect bites, or cuts. Some of these have limited preliminary evidence, but VapoRub isn’t an established treatment for these conditions, and using it could delay appropriate care.
Important safety rules
-
Don’t put it inside your nose or mouth.
-
Keep it away from the eyes and broken or irritated skin.
-
Don’t swallow it.
-
Keep camphor-containing products away from young children.
-
Follow the age restrictions and directions on your particular product.
So, despite the viral “surprising uses” lists, VapoRub isn’t a cure-all. Its best-supported uses are the ones for which the product is specifically labeled.
