👓 Scratches on Glasses: Can a Home Remedy Make Them Disappear?
Be skeptical of the viral claim that one household ingredient can make scratches on eyeglasses disappear instantly. Once a lens is physically scratched, there is no safe DIY liquid that can reliably restore the original surface.
What you can safely do
Rinse the lenses with lukewarm water to remove grit.
Use a small amount of lotion-free dish soap if needed.
Dry with a clean microfiber lens cloth.
Store glasses in a protective case when you’re not wearing them.
🚫 Avoid these “scratch-removal” hacks
Don’t polish lenses with toothpaste, baking soda, glass cleaner, vinegar, alcohol, or abrasive powders. They can damage the lens material or its anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, and other coatings.
Even if a scratch appears less visible afterward, you may simply have altered the surface or coating, potentially making the lens optically worse.
What if the scratch is significant?
If a scratch interferes with your vision, causes distracting glare, or is on a coated lens, take the glasses to an optician. In most cases, a deeply scratched prescription lens is best replaced rather than polished.
Bottom line: Clean lenses can look dramatically clearer, but a genuine scratch can’t safely be erased instantly at home. If a viral trick promises otherwise, it’s more likely to damage your lenses than repair them.
