Sarcopenia: Causes of Muscle Loss and Solutions
Sarcopenia is the progressive loss of muscle strength and muscle mass, most commonly associated with aging. It can affect mobility, balance, independence, and fall risk—but muscle loss is not an inevitable consequence of getting older.
Common causes

Aging: Muscles gradually become less responsive to exercise and dietary protein.

Physical inactivity: Sitting, prolonged bed rest, and reduced activity accelerate muscle loss.

Inadequate protein or calories: Older adults may eat less or have difficulty getting enough protein.

Chronic diseases: Heart, lung, kidney, liver, neurological, and metabolic diseases can contribute.

Hormonal changes: Age-related changes in hormones can affect muscle maintenance.

Inflammation: Chronic illness and inflammation can increase muscle breakdown.
What helps preserve or rebuild muscle?
1. Resistance training — the most important intervention
Strength exercises 2–3 times per week can stimulate muscle growth and improve strength. Examples include:

Weight training
Start at an appropriate level and increase resistance gradually. If someone is frail or has significant medical problems, professional guidance is worthwhile.
2. Get enough protein
A commonly used target for many older adults is around 1.0–1.2 g of protein per kg of body weight per day, with some people needing more during illness or rehabilitation. People with kidney disease should discuss protein intake with their clinician.
Good choices include eggs, fish, poultry, yogurt, milk, beans, lentils, tofu, and other protein-rich foods.
3. Correct vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin D is important for muscle and bone function, but taking large doses when you’re not deficient isn’t a substitute for exercise and adequate nutrition.
4. Keep moving
Walking, climbing stairs, balance exercises, and other regular activities complement strength training and help maintain independence.
5. Look for treatable causes
Rapid or unexplained muscle loss shouldn’t simply be attributed to aging. A clinician can assess nutrition, medications, thyroid function, vitamin deficiencies, chronic disease, and other possible contributors.
A simple weekly approach

The key message: There isn’t a single vitamin, supplement, or “muscle-building” food that reverses sarcopenia. Progressive resistance exercise combined with adequate protein and treatment of underlying problems has much stronger evidence.
