Sad news for drivers over 70, they will soon no longer be able to…

If you’re

referring to the UK, the headline is misleading. Drivers aged 70+ are

not being banned from driving.

The UK government is considering introducing mandatory eyesight tests for drivers aged 70 and over when they renew their licences. Currently, drivers renew at 70 and then every three years, declaring that they meet the required eyesight standard. The eyesight-testing proposal was put out for consultation in January 2026. So the more accurate headline would be:

“Sad news for drivers over 70: new eyesight checks could soon become mandatory”

The proposal is about fitness to drive, not an automatic driving ban based on age.
