…another viral health hook or clickbait warning!
Online articles love to claim that sleeping strictly on your right side is a hidden health hazard. While sleep position does interact with certain physical conditions, a right-side sleeping preference doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong.
Here is what science actually says about right-side sleeping:

1. The Acid Reflux Connection (The Most Common Claim)

  • What the internet says: Sleeping on your right side causes acid reflux.
  • The reality: Due to the physical layout of your anatomy, the stomach sits slightly lower than the esophagus on the left side. When you sleep on your left side, gravity helps keep stomach acid down. If you sleep on your right side, the stomach can sit slightly above the esophageal opening, which makes it easier for acid to creep up if you are already prone to GERD or heartburn. However, if you don’t suffer from acid reflux, right-side sleeping won’t magically give it to you.

2. Heart and Circulatory Considerations

  • What the internet says: It crushes or strains your heart.
  • The reality: For healthy adults, sleeping on the right side does not harm a normal heart. Some cardiologists actually note that right-side sleeping keeps the heart stable in the chest cavity because the majority of the organ is positioned centrally-to-left. (Though for people with specific, advanced heart failure, doctors sometimes monitor how position affects comfort).

3. Pregnancy and Digestion

  • During pregnancy, doctors generally recommend the left side to optimize blood flow to the fetus and prevent heavy organs from pressing against major veins. Otherwise, for the general population, comfort and spinal alignment are far more important than which side you default to.
The Bottom Line: If you wake up feeling rested, pain-free, and without chronic heartburn, your body is likely entirely fine with you sleeping on your right side.
Do you find yourself waking up with any specific aches, stiffness, or heartburn, or are you just exploring how sleep positions impact health?
