“If you always sleep on your right side, you should have…” — what does it mean?

This viral headline usually implies that sleeping exclusively on your right side causes a particular health problem. That’s an oversimplification. For most healthy adults, sleeping on the right side is not inherently dangerous.

What can happen when you sleep on your right side?

  • Acid reflux: Some people with reflux may experience more symptoms on their right side. Left-side sleeping often reduces nighttime reflux.

  • Shoulder or hip discomfort: Keeping pressure on the same side for hours can aggravate joint or muscle pain.

  • Sleep apnea: Side sleeping generally tends to be better than sleeping flat on your back for obstructive sleep apnea, although individual responses vary.

  • Pregnancy: Sleep position can become more important later in pregnancy, but there isn’t a universal requirement to sleep exclusively on the left side.

What about your heart?

You may encounter claims that right-side sleeping is harmful because of the heart’s location. For most people, there is no evidence that simply sleeping on the right side damages the heart. People with certain heart conditions may have individual preferences or recommendations from their clinician.

Bottom line: If you sleep comfortably on your right side and have no medical reason to change positions, there’s generally no need to worry. If you’re waking with chest pain, significant shortness of breath, repeated choking/gasping, or severe reflux, that’s more important than which side you sleep on and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.
