New Method: Could Colonoscopy Become Less Invasive? (1/2)
A new generation of technologies is being developed to make examination of the colon more comfortable and less invasive than traditional colonoscopy.
Traditional colonoscopy uses a flexible camera inserted through the rectum so doctors can examine the lining of the large intestine and, when necessary, remove polyps or take tissue samples.
Newer approaches—including capsule-based imaging and other minimally invasive technologies—aim to make screening easier for some patients by reducing discomfort and avoiding conventional endoscopic equipment.
However, these methods don’t necessarily replace standard colonoscopy in every situation. A conventional colonoscopy can do something many noninvasive tests cannot: directly remove polyps or perform biopsies during the same procedure.
So while the future of colorectal screening may become more comfortable and convenient, the best test depends on the patient’s age, symptoms, risk factors, and screening history.
