NEVER Use Magnesium If You Are Taking Any of the Following Medications

⚠️ Taking Magnesium? Don’t Ignore These Medication Interactions

The claim that you should “never use magnesium” with certain medicines is too broad. Magnesium supplements can interact with some medications, but the issue is often timing or absorption, not that the combination is always forbidden.

Important examples include:

Certain antibiotics — magnesium can bind to some antibiotics, including tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, reducing how much medicine your body absorbs. They generally need to be taken several hours apart according to the medication’s instructions.
Levothyroxine — magnesium can reduce absorption of this thyroid medication. Separating the doses is generally recommended.
Bisphosphonates such as alendronate — magnesium can interfere with absorption, so they should not be taken together.
Some osteoporosis medications and other drugs may have similar mineral-binding interactions.
Diuretics and other medicines affecting magnesium levels can change how much magnesium your body retains or loses, making individualized advice important.
🩺 Kidney disease is especially important

If your kidneys don’t function normally, they may have difficulty removing excess magnesium. Magnesium supplements can therefore become dangerous in people with significant kidney impairment.

Also remember that magnesium found naturally in food is generally different from taking a concentrated supplement.

What should you do?

Don’t automatically stop a prescribed medication or magnesium supplement. Check the exact medication, magnesium product, dose, and timing with your pharmacist or doctor.

If you tell me the name and dose of the medication you’re taking and the type/dose of magnesium, I can explain the specific interaction and how they are typically separated.
