Left-Side Body Pain: What It Could Mean and When to Pay Attention

Pain on the left side of the body can have many causes. The location, severity, duration, and other symptoms help determine whether it may be something minor or requires urgent attention.

Common causes

  • Muscle strain: Often follows exercise, lifting, coughing, or an awkward movement. Pain may worsen when you move or press the area.
  • Gas, indigestion, or constipation: Can cause cramping or pressure in the left abdomen.
  • Kidney problems: A kidney stone or infection can cause pain in the side or back, sometimes with painful urination, fever, nausea, or blood in the urine.
  • Stomach or intestinal problems: Conditions such as gastritis, ulcers, diverticular disease, or other digestive problems can cause left-sided abdominal pain.
  • Nerve irritation: A pinched or irritated nerve can produce sharp, burning, or tingling pain.
  • Shingles: Pain, burning, or sensitivity may occur before a blistering rash appears.

❤️ Left-sided chest or upper-body pain needs special attention

Pain on the left side of the chest, shoulder, arm, back, or jaw can sometimes be associated with a heart attack, particularly when accompanied by:

  • Pressure, squeezing, or heaviness in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Unusual weakness
  • Pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, or jaw

Don’t wait for the pain to become severe. If these symptoms are sudden, severe, or new, seek emergency medical care immediately.

When to see a doctor

Arrange medical evaluation if left-sided pain is persistent, recurrent, unexplained, getting worse, or interfering with normal activities, even if there are no emergency symptoms.

If you tell me where on the left side the pain is (chest, upper abdomen, lower abdomen, back, shoulder, arm, or leg), what it feels like, and how long you’ve had it, I can help you narrow down the possibilities.
