💅 Nail Lines After 40: What Do They Mean?
If you’re talking about vertical lines (ridges) running from the base of the nail toward the tip, they’re usually not a clear sign of a serious disease. They commonly become more noticeable with age because nail growth and moisture levels change.
Other possible causes include:
Dry or brittle nails
Frequent handwashing or exposure to chemicals
Minor repeated trauma to the nails
Nutritional deficiencies in some cases
Certain skin or systemic conditions, particularly when other symptoms are present
🚨 Lines that deserve attention
Horizontal grooves (Beau’s lines), especially if they suddenly appear across several nails, can occur after significant illness, injury, severe stress, or other disruptions to nail growth.
A new dark or brown/black vertical stripe on one nail should be examined by a dermatologist, particularly if the pigment extends onto the surrounding skin.
