If You Think You’re Having a Heart Attack, Do This First
A heart attack is an emergency, and every minute matters. There is no 10-second trick that can stop a heart attack at home.
1. Call Emergency Services
If you have chest pressure or pain, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to your arm, back, neck, or jaw, call your local emergency number immediately. Do not wait to see if it gets better.
2. Sit and Stay Calm
Stop what you are doing and sit in a comfortable position while waiting for help. If emergency professionals advise you to take aspirin, follow their instructions. Aspirin is not suitable for everyone, especially people with an allergy or certain bleeding risks.
Remember: Don’t drive yourself to the hospital. Getting emergency medical help quickly is the most important step.
