How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

Restoring the sparkle to your favorite jewelry doesn’t require harsh chemical cleaners or a trip to the jeweler. With a few basic household items, you can easily clean most gold, platinum, and gemstone pieces safely at home.

Here is a simple, effective method to make your jewelry shine again:

The Gentle Dish Soap Soak Method

Best for: Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, gold, and platinum jewelry.

What You Need:

  • A small bowl

  • Warm (not boiling) water

  • A few drops of mild dish soap (like Dawn)

  • A soft-bristled toothbrush (a children’s toothbrush works best)

  • A clean, lint-free microfiber cloth or paper towel

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Mix the Solution: Fill the small bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap. Stir gently to combine.

  2. Soak the Jewelry: Place your jewelry in the soapy water and let it soak for 15 to 20 minutes. This loosens accumulated body oils, lotion residue, and everyday dirt.

  3. Gently Scrub: Remove one piece at a time and use the soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub around settings, prongs, and the backs of stones where grime hides. Tip: Keep your sink drain plugged or work over a towel so you don’t accidentally lose a piece!

  4. Rinse Thoroughly: Hold the jewelry under a stream of warm, clean running water to wash away loosened soap and debris. (Again, make sure the drain is plugged!)

  5. Dry and Polish: Pat the jewelry dry with a lint-free microfiber cloth, then let it air dry completely before wearing or storing.

Important Materials to Avoid

Not all jewelry handles water and soap the same way. Do not use this method for:

  • Porous Gemstones: Pearls, opals, turquoise, amber, and coral can easily be damaged or discolored by water and soap. They generally require specialized care or a dry cloth wipe-down.

  • Costume or Glued Jewelry: Costume pieces often use glue rather than prongs to hold stones in place; soaking them can dissolve the adhesive and cause stones to fall out
