High blood pressure, high cholesterol: please avoid these 3 things every morning

High Blood Pressure & High Cholesterol: 3 Things to Limit in the Morning

If you’re trying to manage high blood pressure and high cholesterol, breakfast is a good place to make healthier choices. But there isn’t a universal rule that everyone must completely avoid three specific foods. What matters most is your overall eating pattern.

1. Processed meats šŸ„“

Bacon, sausages, ham, and other processed meats can be high in sodium and saturated fat. Regularly eating them can make it harder to manage blood pressure and cholesterol.

Try instead: eggs, beans, unsalted nuts, or fresh lean protein.

2. Sugary breakfast foods 🄐

Doughnuts, pastries, sweetened cereals, and sugary breakfast drinks can provide lots of added sugar and calories with relatively little fiber or nutrition.

Try instead: oatmeal topped with berries, fruit, or a small amount of unsalted nuts.

3. High-sodium convenience foods šŸ§‚

Instant noodles, packaged breakfast sandwiches, heavily salted breads, and other processed foods can contribute substantial sodium to your diet. Too much sodium can raise blood pressure in many people.

Try instead: minimally processed foods prepared at home, using herbs and spices rather than lots of salt.

A heart-friendly breakfast

A simple option could be oatmeal with berries and unsalted nuts, plus water or unsweetened tea. Oats provide soluble fiber, which can help lower LDL (ā€œbadā€) cholesterol as part of an overall healthy diet.

And remember: don’t stop prescribed blood-pressure or cholesterol medication because your diet improves. Diet and medication often work together.

If you have high blood pressure or cholesterol, a personalized eating plan from your doctor or dietitian can account for your other health conditions and medications.
