Yes—you can often freshen and whiten washable bed pillows at home, but check the care label first. Some pillows, especially memory foam and latex, should not be machine-washed.
🛏️ How to clean washable pillows
- Check the label. Make sure the pillow is machine-washable. Replace pillows with badly damaged filling or persistent mold/mildew rather than trying to rescue them.
- Pre-treat yellow stains. Mix a little liquid laundry detergent with water and gently work it into sweat or body-oil stains. Let it sit for about 10–15 minutes.
- Wash two pillows together. This helps keep a top-loading machine balanced. Use a gentle cycle with warm water, following the pillow’s care instructions.
- Use a small amount of detergent. Too much detergent can remain trapped inside the filling and make rinsing difficult.
- Add an extra rinse. This is particularly useful for bulky pillows because detergent can be difficult to remove completely.
- Dry completely. Tumble-dry on low heat if the label permits. Add clean dryer balls or tennis balls to help redistribute the filling. Stop periodically to fluff the pillow and check for dampness.
- Don’t put it back on the bed while damp. Moisture trapped inside can encourage mildew.
✨ What about whitening?
For white, washable fabric pillows, an oxygen-based laundry whitener can sometimes help with yellowing. Follow the product and pillow-care instructions carefully.
Avoid mixing cleaning products—especially chlorine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners.
And for that “sweet-smelling” finish, clean pillowcases and allow the pillows to dry thoroughly rather than simply masking odors with heavy fragrance. If a pillow still smells musty after a complete wash and drying, replacing it may be the better option.
