Poor blood flow to the legs
Kidney, thyroid, or metabolic conditions

What to do when a cramp strikes

Try to gently stretch the cramped muscle. For a calf cramp, straighten the leg and pull your toes toward your face. Standing and putting weight on the affected leg may also help. Gentle massage or warmth can provide additional relief.

Bottom line: An occasional nighttime cramp is usually nothing dangerous. But frequent or worsening cramps deserve attention, especially if you’re taking medications or have another medical condition that could be contributing.
