Sleeping on your right side is not inherently dangerous for most people. Headlines suggesting that doctors universally warn against it are usually overstated.
There are, however, some situations where sleep position can matter:
-
Acid reflux/GERD: Sleeping on the left side generally reduces nighttime reflux more than sleeping on the right side. Right-side sleeping can make reflux worse for some people.
-
Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally encouraged later in pregnancy, but the evidence does not mean that lying on the right side is inherently unsafe. People can usually change positions naturally.
-
Heart conditions: There isn’t good evidence that healthy people should avoid the right side simply to “protect the heart.” People with specific heart or breathing conditions may receive individualized advice.
-
Snoring/sleep apnea: Side sleeping can be preferable to sleeping flat on the back for some people because it may reduce airway obstruction.
So, if you sleep comfortably on your right side and don’t have a condition requiring a particular position, there’s generally no reason to be alarmed.
If the headline you saw claims that right-side sleeping causes a particular problem—such as heart failure, stroke, reflux, or poor circulation—tell me the specific claim and I can separate the evidence from the social-media hype.
