What can happen after repeated use
Castor oil can cause a bowel movement, often within several hours. With repeated use, however, you may experience:
- Abdominal cramps
- Diarrhea or loose stools
- Nausea
- Dehydration
- Loss of electrolytes, particularly if diarrhea is substantial
- Dizziness or weakness
Older adults can be more vulnerable to dehydration and electrolyte disturbances, particularly if they have kidney or heart problems or take medications that affect fluid balance.
If you’re using it for constipation
Occasional use may be appropriate for some adults, but using castor oil every day for a week shouldn’t be treated as a routine health practice. Persistent constipation is better addressed by looking for the cause and using safer, evidence-based approaches such as adequate fluids, dietary fiber, physical activity, and—when appropriate—a clinician-recommended laxative.
Also, castor oil doesn’t “clean out toxins,” remove years of waste from the colon, or repair internal organs.
If you tell me whether you’re considering taking castor oil orally or applying it to your skin/hair, I can explain what seven days of that particular use is likely to do and what risks to watch for.
