Cardiologist reveals #1 exercise to prevent heart attack

“Cardiologist Reveals the #1 Exercise to Prevent a Heart Attack” — What’s the Truth?

There isn’t a single exercise that can guarantee prevention of a heart attack. But if you want one simple exercise with strong evidence behind it, brisk walking is an excellent choice for most adults.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, and specifically lists brisk walking as an example. Regular physical activity can reduce cardiovascular risk and improve blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and fitness.

🚶 Why brisk walking?

It’s:

  • Easy to start and maintain
  • Low-impact compared with running
  • Accessible without special equipment
  • Easy to increase gradually
  • Effective when performed regularly

A practical target is 30 minutes of brisk walking, 5 days a week. You can also break that into shorter sessions—for example, three 10-minute walks.

💪 Don’t stop at walking

For the best overall cardiovascular health, combine aerobic activity with muscle-strengthening exercises at least 2 days a week.

And exercise is only one piece of prevention. Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, avoiding tobacco, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a heart-healthy diet are also important.

⚠️ One important caution

If you’re currently inactive, start gradually rather than suddenly doing intense exercise. If you have known heart disease or significant medical conditions, ask your healthcare professional what level of exercise is appropriate.
