Brittle or fragile nails: what your body is trying to tell you

Brittle or Fragile Nails: What Could Your Body Be Telling You?

Brittle, splitting, or peeling nails are common and usually not a sign of a serious disease. They can result from everyday exposure to water, detergents, nail polish/removers, or repeated manicures. But persistent changes can sometimes point to an underlying issue.

Possible causes include:

  • Frequent wetting and drying: Repeated exposure to water can make nails split or peel.

  • Iron deficiency: Can sometimes be associated with brittle or spoon-shaped nails, particularly when anemia is present.

  • Thyroid disorders: Both underactive and overactive thyroid conditions can affect nails.

  • Nutritional deficiencies: Inadequate protein or certain nutrients may contribute, particularly when the diet is significantly restricted.

  • Fungal nail infection: More likely when nails become thickened, discolored, crumbly, or separated from the nail bed.

  • Psoriasis or eczema: Can produce pitting, ridges, discoloration, or changes in nail texture.

  • Normal aging: Nails often become thinner, drier, and more fragile with age.

  • Certain medications or medical treatments: Some drugs can affect nail growth and structure.

When should you get it checked?

See a healthcare professional if the change is new, persistent, affects several nails, or comes with fatigue, hair loss, unexplained weight changes, skin changes, pain, or discoloration.

And don’t automatically assume brittle nails mean you need a biotin or iron supplement. It’s better to identify a deficiency before taking high-dose supplements.
