3 ways to keep bananas fresh longer
1. Wrap the stems
Wrap the crown of the banana bunch with plastic wrap. This may modestly slow ripening, although results vary.
2. Hang them separately
Keep bananas in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Hanging them may reduce bruising.
3. Refrigerate when ripe
Once bananas reach your preferred ripeness, put them in the refrigerator. The peel may turn brown, but the fruit inside can remain good for several additional days.
One important tip: Keep bananas away from apples and other fruits that release ethylene gas, which can accelerate ripening.
The best strategy for extending their useful life is to let them ripen at room temperature, then refrigerate them once ripe. Ten extra days isn’t guaranteed, but this can help reduce waste.
