Very Leafy Orchid? Be Careful With “Miracle” Watering Recipes 🌱
If an orchid has lots of healthy leaves but isn’t flowering, adding a kitchen ingredient to the water isn’t a reliable way to make it “10 times more beautiful.” Orchids generally respond better to proper light, watering, drainage, and appropriate fertilizer.
Try this instead:
Water thoroughly, then let it drain completely. Don’t leave the pot sitting in water.
Water when the potting medium is approaching dry, rather than following a rigid daily schedule. Clear orchid pots can make it easier to see the roots and moisture level.
Give it bright, indirect light. Insufficient light is a common reason orchids produce leaves but few flowers.
Use a diluted orchid fertilizer during active growth according to the product instructions rather than homemade mixtures.
Keep the leaves and crown from staying wet. Water trapped in the central crown can encourage rot.
Don’t use sugar, milk, vinegar, coffee, or baking soda as fertilizer. These household remedies can damage roots or encourage microbial growth.
If your orchid has many green leaves but won’t bloom, the first things I’d check are light and the plant’s normal flowering cycle, not a special watering recipe.
