Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

🍌 Bananas Last Longer With This Simple Kitchen Item

The kitchen item commonly mentioned in this viral tip is plastic wrap (cling film). The idea is to wrap the banana stems rather than leaving the bunch exposed in a fruit bowl.

Why it may help

Bananas naturally produce ethylene, a plant hormone that promotes ripening. The stems are an important source of ethylene, and wrapping them can reduce its release and potentially slow the ripening process.

How to do it

  1. Separate the bananas if you want to slow each one individually.

  2. Cut a small piece of plastic wrap.

  3. Wrap it snugly around the stem/crown.

  4. Keep the bananas somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and heat.

  5. Once they reach the ripeness you like, refrigeration can slow further deterioration. The peel may become dark, but the fruit inside can remain good.

🍌 Does it really add 10 days?

Not reliably. The “10 days longer” part is an attention-grabbing claim, not a guarantee. Ripening depends on the banana variety, how ripe it was when purchased, temperature, humidity, and handling.

Also, keeping bananas away from other ripe fruit can help because fruits such as apples and pears release ethylene too.

Bottom line: wrapping banana stems may modestly extend their usable life, but there is no kitchen trick that reliably guarantees an extra 10 days.
