Amlodipine Side Effects You Shouldn’t Ignore
Amlodipine is a commonly prescribed calcium-channel blocker for high blood pressure and angina. Most side effects are mild, but some symptoms require prompt medical attention.
Common side effects
These can occur particularly when starting treatment or after a dose increase:
- Swollen ankles, feet, or legs — the most common side effect
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Flushing
- Palpitations
- Tiredness or weakness
- Nausea or stomach discomfort
Persistent or bothersome swelling should be discussed with your doctor; don’t simply stop the medication yourself.
🚨 Symptoms you should not ignore
Seek urgent medical attention for:
- Chest pain or worsening angina
- Severe shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Severe rash, blistering, or peeling skin
- Severe abdominal pain, particularly with vomiting or feeling very unwell
- Fainting or a serious abnormal heartbeat
Rarely, starting amlodipine or increasing the dose can worsen angina or precipitate a heart attack, particularly in people with severe obstructive coronary artery disease.

Don’t stop amlodipine suddenly without medical advice. Your blood pressure or angina can worsen when treatment is stopped.
