🚨 7 “Strange” Signs That May Be Linked to Kidney Problems
A headline saying your kidneys are “crying for help” is catchy, but kidney disease often causes few or no symptoms in its early stages. Symptoms alone can’t tell you whether your kidneys are failing—a blood test and urine test are much more useful.
Possible warning signs include:
Swelling in the ankles, feet, legs, or around the eyes — impaired kidney function can contribute to fluid retention.
Changes in urination — such as noticeably more or less urine, frequent nighttime urination, or persistent changes in urine appearance.
Foamy or unusually bubbly urine — persistent foam can sometimes indicate excess protein in the urine.
Blood in the urine — pink, red, or cola-colored urine should be medically evaluated, although there are many possible causes besides kidney disease.
Persistent fatigue or weakness — advanced kidney disease can contribute to anemia and buildup of waste products.
Nausea, poor appetite, or a metallic taste — these can occur with more advanced kidney dysfunction, but they’re nonspecific symptoms.
Itching, muscle cramps, or trouble concentrating — these can occur when kidney function becomes significantly impaired, although many other conditions can cause them.

If you’re concerned about your kidneys, don’t wait for symptoms. High blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, a family history of kidney disease, and older age can increase kidney-disease risk.
A clinician can check blood creatinine/eGFR and urine albumin to assess kidney function.
Seek urgent medical care for very little or no urine, severe shortness of breath, chest pain, severe weakness/confusion, or rapidly worsening swelling.
And don’t assume every change in urine or swelling means kidney disease—there are many other possible explanations.
